Ilhan Omar Speaks, They Shout

When it comes to ignoring the human rights violations of the US and allies like Israel, a lot of the Democrat leadership are no different than conservative jingoist. We're seeing this now with House Democrats attacking Rep. Ilhan Omar for her tweet calling out the US and Israel, among Hamas and the Taliban, for committing unthinkable atrocities. She's simply calling for equal accountability. Not surprisingly, this equivocation of the US with terrorists fueled the right wing vitriol.

Head over to The Intercept for a better rundown of this nonsense:

The GOP’s perspective on the [International Criminal Court] has always been straightforward: The U.S. has the right to go anywhere on Earth and do anything we want, and it is fundamentally illegitimate for Americans to ever face any consequences. Democrats see the issue in largely the same way but feel that equivalent goals can be accomplished with less shouting. Both parties decisively reject the standard articulated by Robert Jackson, the American chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg Tribunal, at the end of World War II: “If certain acts of violation of treaties are crimes, they are crimes whether the United States does them or whether Germany does them. And we are not prepared to lay down the rule of criminal conduct against others which we would not be willing to have invoked against us.”

And while I'm reluctant to link to The Hill, which is all about bothsidesism, the following clip is quite cathartic to watch. Ryam Grim calmly and precisely schools Emily Jashinsky (representing the right here) on the matter.

Of course, this isn't the first time Ilhan has been mistreated for speaking truths. One problem with these continued attacks from the media and congress is that they can lead to real-world violence. Take a listen to the hate she has to deal with:

Remember when Drumpf said the US isn't so innocent? I guess it's okay when he says it.

Fortunately, Ilhan Omar doesn't stand alone: Progressives Support Rep. Omar Against Bad Faith Attacks.
